Bluetooth & USB CAN Programming Interface for Powerstroke Diesel

Chimera is a wireless OBDII pass-thru module designed from the ground up for PHP tuning, calibration, and diagnostics. Plug into the OBDII port, connect via Bluetooth or USB, and program your ECM or FICM from anywhere in the cab — no cables across the dash.

What Is Chimera?

Chimera is Power Hungry Performance's next-generation vehicle programming pass-thru — a compact OBDII module that bridges your PC, tablet, or laptop to your Powerstroke's ECM and FICM over a high-speed CAN interface.

Built around the ESP32 platform, Chimera offers both USB and Bluetooth Serial Port Profile (SPP) connectivity. Plug it into the OBDII port, pair it with your computer, and your tuning software sees a standard COM port — no proprietary cables, no dock, no fuss.

Whether you're flashing a fresh calibration on the bench or pulling data from a customer's truck on the lot, Chimera goes where you go.

Why Chimera? Traditional pass-thru tools tie you to the OBDII port with a long, fragile cable. Chimera breaks that tether. Power it from the truck's 12V or from USB, sit comfortably in the cab or at the bench, and program with confidence on a clean, dedicated link built for diesel tuning workloads.

How It Works

1

Plug Into the OBDII Port

Chimera's integrated OBDII male connector plugs directly into your vehicle's diagnostic port. The truck's 12V supply powers the module — no external batteries, wall warts, or breakout boxes required. For bench programming, USB power works just as well.

2

Pair via Bluetooth or USB

For wireless operation, pair Chimera with your PC the same way you'd pair any Bluetooth device. It registers as "PHP PASS THRU" and exposes a standard SPP COM port. For maximum throughput and stability — especially during flash operations — connect via USB instead.

3

Launch Your PHP Software

Open your Power Hungry Performance tuning, calibration, or diagnostic application. Select the COM port assigned to Chimera. The software auto-detects the module, queries firmware version, and brings the CAN bus online.

4

Program, Read, or Monitor

Flash a new calibration to your ECM, write a FICM strategy, pull current cal files, or stream live CAN data. Status LEDs give you instant visual feedback on link health, CAN traffic, and 18V programming voltage state throughout the operation.

🔌
USB Recommended for Flash Operations

While Bluetooth is great for diagnostics, live data, and convenience tasks, we strongly recommend using USB for PCM and FICM flash operations. A wired connection eliminates the risk of RF interference interrupting a flash mid-write — which can leave a module in an unrecoverable state.

Diagnostics

Live CAN Monitoring

Stream real-time CAN frames straight to your laptop. Configure acceptance filters to focus on only the IDs you care about. The green CAN LED gives you instant visual confirmation of bus activity.

Workflow

Bench & In-Vehicle

Power from 12V OBDII in the truck, or from 5V USB on the bench. Same module, same workflow, same software — whether you're working on a customer's truck or programming spare ECMs in the shop.

Status LEDs

Chimera's four status LEDs give you immediate visual feedback on what the module is doing — without ever opening the software.

Yellow — Heartbeat

Pulses steadily when the pass-thru firmware is running. If it's blinking, the brain is alive.

Green — CAN RX

Flashes each time a CAN frame matching your acceptance filter is received from the vehicle bus.

Blue — COM Link

Solid when the host COM port is open. Blinks briefly when a valid 8-byte message arrives over Bluetooth.

Red — 18V FEPS

Illuminates whenever the 18V programming voltage is active — your warning that a flash operation is live.

Field Notes

📶
Bluetooth Performance Depends on RF Environment

Bluetooth Classic operates in the crowded 2.4 GHz band. In RF-heavy environments (busy shops, dense Wi-Fi, lots of nearby devices), use USB for the most reliable link. Keeping host Wi-Fi on 5 GHz also dramatically improves Bluetooth stability.

🔋
Power From OBDII or USB

Chimera will run on either source. Use the OBDII 12V supply for in-vehicle work; use USB for bench operations where no vehicle is connected.

📡
Standard SPP — Works With Any Modern PC

Chimera shows up as a standard Bluetooth Serial Port Profile (SPP) device on Windows, macOS, and Linux. No custom drivers required — Windows assigns it a normal COM port that your tuning software opens like any other.

⚙️
Firmware Updates Over USB

Chimera firmware is field-upgradeable using the Espressif Flash Download Tool over USB. New features and fixes can be deployed to your existing module without sending it in.
